City of Nature, Birmingham

Birmingham City Council

Our judges hailed this project as having unusually comprehensive ambitions and for being professionally state of the art

The City of Nature Plan is a strategy and governance model that puts nature at the heart of decision-making in response to the Climate Emergency and environmental justice inequality across the City’s wards. It is part of the mechanism to deliver Birmingham’s Future City Plan 2040, which was the recipient of one of last year’s WMNP awards and has now been adopted across all of the Council’s directorates meaning that every department will play a part in its delivery.

The judges were impressed at how the City of Nature Plan “takes the Future City Plan to the next level, bringing real change to landscape urban policy”, praising it for being “unusually comprehensive and ambitious” and noting that it “has the potential to be an internationally significant approach in the way it works across sectors to address issues such as climate change.”
