Rural Patterns

LOCATION:  Katerini, Greece

APPLICANT(S):  Eleni Tsirintani, Tsirintani Landscape Architects. With Aikaterini Olga Kefalogianni, Manolis Stavrakakis, Lucy Gezekelian and. Nori ΥukiIshii

This project won the design competition for the regeneration of Katerini’s city centre pedestrian network. Taking inspiration from the surrounding agricultural patterns, the design utilises patterns of innovative rainwater management surfaces to mitigate the city’s flooding risk and provide new spaces for urban interactions.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS

This project demonstrated new technologies of permeable hard surfaces to help mitigate and manage flood risk and climate adaptation. It was good to see a plan that incorporates all of the public spaces and thoroughfares into one cohesive design proposal to ensure an integrated identity, and the judges applaud the attention to detail such as proposals for multi-functional Liberty Square.

The judges acknowledged that the tight remit of this project’s focus on rainwater management was convincingly demonstrated with new and innovative permeable granite surfacing. We look forward to seeing its implementation and hearing about its ongoing performance in the changing climate conditions.
