Confluence Peri-Urban Park

Confluence Peri-Urban Park

JOINT WINNER 2024 WMNP AWARDS

LOCATION:  Prague, Czech Republic

APPLICANT(S):  Zdeněk Ent, IPR Prague (Prague Institute of   Planning and Development).

This project is focused on a 1,300-hectare floodplain at the confluence of the Berounka and Vltava rivers on the outskirts of Prague. The area was identified as being at risk from the impacts of both climate change and un-checked development, so the city authorities launched an international competition to establish a peri-urban park that could enhance the floodplain environment and provide new resources for the municipality. 13 initial designs were submitted to the competition which was eventually won by an international team from EMF + NORMA + PARETO practices.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS

·The judges saw that this is an incredibly in-depth project, with documentation outlining the vision for the area across multiple scenarios. ·The creation of visionary guidebooks including a spatial vision, management and finance strategy, visual identity, flood scenarios and local design proposals demonstrated an integrated understanding of the area and its function. ·The judges were impressed by the municipality’s ambition for the project, and its boldness in selecting this comprehensive proposal from EMF/NORMA/PARETO

We were delighted to see how a project whose focus was on integrated landscape development, climate adaptation and community resourcing was undertaken with a spatial strategy and design-led ethos without compromising on its environmental and social impetus. The commitment to innovative governance and finance models to ensure its success, together with the programme of innovative community events to intrigue and convince local people was also highly praised by the judges.
